About the Skills Bootcamp

The Repair, Refurb and Retrofit Skills Bootcamp provides hands‑on experience in core construction trades such as carpentry, joinery, plumbing and multi‑skills.

Learners receive practical training designed to help them progress into employment or apprenticeships.

Why Russo joined the Skills Bootcamp

Russo was introduced to the Bootcamp through a partner organisation supporting him back into the workforce. After hearing how the programme worked and what he could gain from it, he enrolled straight away.

“The course was brought to me by REED in partnership who were helping to try and get me into the workforce. The course was explained really well and I signed up the same day.”

His experience on the course

Russo valued the accessibility of the training centre and the supportive tutors who guided him throughout the course.

“The centre is super close to any bus stops and train stations. The staff have been great honestly, and fun to work with. They’ve been really good at guiding, especially Dave or Lee.”

He particularly enjoyed the practical, creative elements of the programme:

“I really really enjoyed the joinery part of carpentry too. That was really fun. We also did a team project which I directed and made this tree for Christmas.”

The course also helped him build confidence socially:

“I came here not knowing anybody but I’ve actually made some friends now who I’ve added on WhatsApp and can talk to which is nice.”

Future plans

Russo is aiming to enter the construction industry, with a particular interest in plumbing and carpentry. He hopes to work on properties that are yet to be occupied.

“I’d like to do plumbing and carpentry as a trade when I leave. I was told about all different types of work and I would like to work on houses that are not yet occupied.”
