Sonia Watson, Breakfast Show Presenter on BBC Essex
Tune in to the world of radio presenting with Sonia Watson, Breakfast Show Presenter on BBC Essex.
Why do I love my job?
Being on the radio is very exciting – it’s always a lot of fun speaking into a microphone and knowing that people are listening to you in their cars or at work or home. It’s very rewarding to know that something you say can brighten someone’s day.
I get to interview lots of different people and hear their stories. It might be the Prime Minister one day, a footballer the next …or maybe even you one day!
What did I love doing at school?
My favourite subject at school was English. I love reading and I also love writing.

Childhood hobbies
I often used to record pretend radio shows in my bedroom on a cassette player with my friend. We used to do the news reports and the weather and have lots of fun – so maybe a sign of what I was going to grow up to be.
I liked skateboarding too, but the less said about that the better!
How to get into the sector
If you want to get into radio, listen to lots of it. There are many media courses you can study too to learn about how it all works.

Related jobs
Radio can include many roles – from being a producer (coming up with ideas), to being a reporter (telling the stories) to being the voice (the presenter). There are also more technical jobs to keep us on the air.
Career high
Making and narrating a BBC Podcast, which has done very well and was nominated for an award!
Top tip: Never be afraid to come up with lots of ideas, ask questions and don’t give up if you get a knockback. - Sonia Watson, Breakfast Show Presenter on BBC Essex
