Why do I love my job? I love my job because there are always new and advanced technologies coming out in the genomics field, which I find very exciting! I also get to be involved in lots of different projects where I use my passion to help researchers achieve their goals. One day, I might be helping a researcher to understand how genes are regulated, the next day I could be helping another to understand how cells interact with each other. Mostly, I love that I am contributing to important research that helps us to better understand human biology!

What did I love doing at school? I have always loved science, but I also enjoyed creative subjects like art and music at school (and still do!)

Childhood hobbies? I was a competitive swimmer for a long time and played the flute in an orchestra. I also liked drawing and painting.

How to get into the sector? After my A-levels I went to university to study ‘Biochemistry with Human Biology’. I then did a master’s degree in ‘Molecular Medicine’. Both my degrees involved learning essential lab skills and carrying out scientific research. I really enjoyed my university experience, and there are loads of universities in the UK to choose from that offer similar courses. You can also get into a job like mine through apprenticeships and T-levels.

Related jobs? Clinical/Biomedical Scientist, Lab Technician, Research Assistant, Assay Development Scientist, Biotechnology Engineer, Bioinformatician

Career high? Contributing to identifying COVID-19 viral strains during the pandemic was a big career high for me. The data I generated informed the UK Government of how the virus was spreading and evolving. I’m proud to say I helped with a very important cause!

Top tip: If you want to work in a lab, try and get a much lab experience as possible! A lot of companies and research institutes offer summer placements or shadowing opportunities which are great for gaining hands-on skills in real-life settings. - Laura Durrant, Genomics Specialist
