Why do I love my job?

I love working in public relations (PR). I enjoy writing and getting stories in the paper, online, on radio and TV. I find it exciting coming up with new ideas to get publicity for a client. It’s also fun working with celebrities to make people aware of a new campaign. I also enjoy organising events and meeting new people. Working in PR requires great communication skills and the ability to engage with lots of different people.

What did I love doing at school?

My favourite subject at school was Geography but I always got higher marks for English. I ended up doing a degree in Geography, probably because I love going on lots of holidays and wanted to see the world. The two subjects worked well together, I could learn something new and write lots of essays. I now also do PR for tourism destinations, so it’s worked out well for me.

Childhood hobbies?

I learnt to play a musical instrument and took part in lots of competitions. I had to practice everyday and it made me work hard and become very resilient.

How to get into PR?

If you like reading and writing and talking to people you would probably enjoy a career in PR. However, you do need to keep an active eye on the news and have an interest in what’s making headlines. Most entry level positions require a degree, but there are some opportunities for apprenticeships. People can also get into the profession via jobs in digital media, running social media campaigns.

Related jobs?

People who work in PR often have thought about journalism or worked as journalists. With the growth of social media and bloggers there’s a lot of opportunities in the media world for young people. Other related jobs include event managers.
