Learn About Foundation Apprenticeships

What are Foundation Apprenticeships?

Foundation Apprenticeships, launched in May 2025, are Level 2 programmes designed to help businesses bring inclusive talent into the workforce. They are open to 16–21‑year‑olds, (up to age 24 for young people with an EHCP or care experience) and last a minimum of eight months as a paid role.

For employers in Essex, Foundation Apprenticeships are a practical and affordable way to bring new people into the business and develop skills from the ground up. They offer a supported, lower‑risk way to give young people their first experience of work, help them build role‑specific skills, and support recruitment at entry level.

A Foundation Apprenticeship can be a stepping stone into a full Accessible Apprenticeship or lead straight into paid employment, allowing employers to grow and retain talent over time. There is financial support available, and reasonable adjustments can be put in place where needed to ensure individuals are able to perform well and progress confidently.

Foundation Apprenticeship Sectors

Foundation Apprenticeships are currently available in Construction, Engineering and Manufacturing, Digital, and Health and Social Care.

From 2026, Foundation Apprenticeships will also be available in Hospitality and Retail.

How they work

  • The apprentice is employed by you and paid as part of your workforce
  • Training and any additional support are fully funded
  • The role focuses on building core workplace skills and confidence
  • Most programmes last around eight months, with progression into a full apprenticeship or employment

On completion of the programme, the apprentice can move into:

  • a full apprenticeship, or
  • ongoing employment.

This gives businesses time to develop the individual and decide on next steps, offering a supported ‘try before you commit’ approach to recruitment.

Why businesses use Foundation Apprenticeships

Businesses choose Foundation Apprenticeships because they:

  • Reduce recruitment risk
  • Offer a shorter initial commitment
  • Build a future inclusive workforce
  • Develop skills at entry level

They work well where a role is new, or where someone needs time to become work‑ready.
