What are Supported Internships and how can they support my business?

A Supported Internship is a structured, work-based study program designed for young people aged 16 to 24 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) who have a current Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan. The primary goal of a Supported Internship is to equip individuals with the skills and experience necessary for long-term, paid employment. Interns spend most of their time in the workplace, supported by a job coach, while also participating in a full-time educational program that may include subjects like English, maths, and other relevant employability qualifications. The work placement is integrated into their course, is unpaid, and lasts between six and nine months.

Benefits to your business:

Access to a Diverse Talent Pool

Gain access to motivated young people who bring unique perspectives and skills to your workplace.

Enhanced Corporate Social Responsibility

Demonstrate your commitment to inclusivity and social responsibility by providing opportunities for young people with SEND.

Improved Workplace Culture

Foster a more inclusive and supportive work environment, which can boost morale and teamwork among your employees.

Positive Community Impact

Contribute to the local community by supporting young people in their transition to the workforce, helping them achieve independence and increased self-confidence.

Potential for Increased Retention

Interns who transition into full-time roles often have higher retention rates as they know the company culture and expectations, which reduces onboarding time and boosts job satisfaction.

Make Informed Hiring Decisions

Evaluate potential employees to ensure they are a good match to your business before making a long-term commitment.

Supported internships offer a solution to skills shortages across all industries, with opportunities to grow talent and develop a motivated, skilled and inclusive workforce.

The support from business to education ensures the employability “value chain”, significantly improving the quality and readiness of interns to achieve paid work, as well as promoting productivity and inclusivity in your business.
